Assam’s Germany village drawing tourists for unique reasons

GUWAHATI: A nondescript village in Lakhimpur district has become a major attraction for domestic and international tourists. A family of Germany village is drawing a large number of tourists because of the unique cane products it possesses.

The family of Late Golap Saikia preserves the cane products which date back to almost 100 years.

Shirts, trousers, watches, spectacles, jackets were made of cane by Golap Saikia who passed away a few years ago.

“We have been preserving more than thirty products. Our grandfather used to wear shirts made of cane,” said a grandson of Golap Saikia.

On the other hand, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University who visited the family said, “This kind of handicraft is on the verge. We are really amazed with the cane products. Government should take steps to preserve this kind of products.”
