GUWAHATI, Dec 15: Delhi-based cardiac surgeon from Assam Dr Ritwick Raj Bhuyan has become not just talk of the town but is receiving plaudits across the country and abroad after he and his team transplanted a “live heart” flown in from Nagpur on a 59-year-old female patient in Delhi.
The donor heart was airlifted from Nagpur to Delhi and then transported through a green corridor to Fortis Escorts Hospital.
This operation was completed by a team of specialist surgeons headed by Dr Bhuyan and Dr Milind Hote, both directors of adult cardiac surgery at Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi.
The heart’s journey began at Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra, at 12.53 am on Dec 9 with the organ flown in an air ambulance at 1.12 am and reached Delhi airport at 3.19am, reports said.
After landing, it was transported through a green corridor from IGI Airport to the hospital in just 27 minutes.
The donor family from Nagpur decided to donate the organ after their 43-yera-old member died following a brain stroke, reports said, while the recipient was a woman suffering from serious cardiac issues who had earlier been fitted with a pacemaker.
