Gauhati HC grants interim bail to ‘foreigner’ Army veteran Md. Sana Ullah

Indian Army veteran Md. Sanah Ullah, presently lodged at the Goalpara detention centre after being declared a ‘foreigner’ by the Foreigners’ Tribunal, has been granted bail by a division bench of the Gauhati High Court. The court had heared the bail petition moved by the Army veteran’s lawyers along with the writ petition challenging the FT court’s order that was earlier filed by a group of lawyers.

The Gauhati High Court division bench granted interim bail to Sana Ullah on a bailbond of Rs 20,000 along with “two local sureties of the like amount”.

The high court had earlier in the day issued notices to the Assam Government, Govt. of India, the ECI, NRC office and then Investigating Officer Chandramal Das besides making them party in the case.

Fifty-two-year-old Ullah, hailing from near Chaygaon, joined the Indian army in 1987 and retired as an honorary captain in 2017.

After retiring from the army, he joined the Assam police in its border wing and was serving as a sub inspector when he was declared a foreigner by the foreigners’ tribunal and later sent to the Goalpara detention camp.
