GUWAHATI: Several organisations, noted personalities and laymen have welcomed the Assam Government’s decision to make Assamese mandatory from class 1 to 10 in all educational institutes of the State.

On Sunday, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at a press meet in Guwahati announced that the Assam Government has made it mandatory for all educational institutes in the State excluding Barak Valley and Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) to teach Assamese as a subject from class 1 to 10.

Sarma stated that in BTAD, the subject will be Bodo, and in Barak valley Bengali.

Welcoming the move, Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi, former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha said, “It is a historic move to preserve and promote the Assamese language. The decision of the education department will play pivotal role in strengthening the foundation of the language.”

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi also termed the move as historic and far-reaching. He demanded that Assamese should be made mandatory in the schools operating in Assam under the boards of Central Government.

On the other hand, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) president Dwipen Boro has demanded to address the various problems Bodo-medium schools have been facing outside the BTAD. He said that ABSU has always been favouring three-language policy in educational institutes.

Several other organisations and citizens have also welcomed the government’s decision to make Assamese mandatory up to class 10.

“I think education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking such a great step in preserving our language. It is really a praiseworthy decision. I hope it will help in keeping alive our language as well as culture and tradition,” said Iyarif Zaman, a teacher at a private English-medium school.
