Assam: Veteran journalist Jadu Kakati passes away

Veteran journalist Jadu Kakati passed away at the age of 92 in Guwahati on January 5.

According to reports, Kakati was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) due to old age ailments and was later declared dead by the doctors on Friday morning.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to the microblogging site X to express his condolences.

He wrote, “প্ৰবীণ সাংবাদিক যদু কাকতি ডাঙৰীয়াৰ বিয়োগৰ বাতৰিটো পাই মৰ্মাহত হৈছোঁ। ৬০ৰ দশকৰ পৰা সুদীৰ্ঘকাল সংবাদ সেৱাৰ সৈতে জড়িত হৈ তেখেতে সংবাদ জগতলৈ অতুলনীয় অৱদান আগবঢ়াই থৈ গৈছে। গণৰাজ্য দিৱস সাংবাদিক বঁটাৰে সন্মানিত কাকতি ডাঙৰীয়াৰ বিদেহ আত্মাৰ সদগতি কামনাৰ লগতে তেখেতৰ শোকসন্তপ্ত পৰিয়ালবৰ্গলৈ গভীৰ সমবেদনা জ্ঞাপন কৰিছোঁ।”

He started his career in 1966 with ‘Assam Samachar’.

From 1968 to 1974, the journalist was associated with the Neelachal newspaper.

Jadu Kakati worked with the daily Agradoot from 1989 to 1991. The journalist was also associated with the daily Janambhoomi.

Jadu Kakati, one of the founders of Media Trust Assam, was undergoing treatment at GMCH since December 8.

In 2020, on Republic Day, the Assam government presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to the journalist.

The mortal remains of Jadu Kakati are currently kept at his hangerabari residence.
