Assam Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya has ordered a probe into horrific Dergaon accident that killed 12 people and left 30 others injured on Wednesday morning.

At least 12 people lost their lives and 30 others injured after a bus collided head on with a truck at Dergaon in Assam’s Golaghat district this morning. Among those deceased include 3 minors.

It was indeed a tragic incident as the bus was boarded by picknickers who were on their way to the Tilinga Mandir in Tinsukia district.

Expressing grief over the horrific Dergaon accident Minister Suklabaidya took to X and wrote, “Deeply shocked to learn about the tragic road accident in Balijan today morning which has taken 10 precious lives & injuring many! My deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved. I pray to almighty for the speedy recovery of the injured ones.”

Speaking on the incident the minister assured full financial assistance to the kin of the deceased families and all medical help for the injured.

Suklabaidya added that the main culprit behind the incident will be punished and a complaint will be filed against the road contractor for the ‘poor road construction’ of the ill-fated route.

Police said the accident took place when the bus, carrying 45 passengers, was on the way to Tinsukia’s Tilinga Mandir. It collided with a truck in Dergaon.

The critically injured have been shifted to Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, while those who sustained minor injuries are being terated at Dergaon.

Prima facie it appears that the accident occured as the truck was coming in the wrong land, but the police as well as the district administration are also exploring other angles into the accident.
