GUWAHATI, Jan 7: Three of the 9 miners trapped at a coal mine at Tini Kilo Kalamati, Umrangso, in Assam’s Dima Hasao district are feared dead even as operations to rescue the rest of the miners from the coal mine are underway with NDRF and SDRF teams engaged in the rescue operations.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is in New Delhi following prior engagements, is overseeing the entire operations and had directed the DC and SP of Dima Hasao district to rush to the incident site while also revealing that Kaushik Rai, who was recently inducted into his cabinet, will also oversee the rescue operations at ground zero.
Rai had already reached the incident site and is coordinating the rescue operations.
Chief Minister Sarma also said that besides requisitioning Army experts, the government has also sought the help of Navy divers to rescue the trapped miners.
The Navy divers, Chief Minister Sarma said, are flying in from Visakhapatnam and are expected to arrive at the site very soon.
The incident took place on Monday morning after the mine became inundated, leaving around 27 miners trapped inside. Although around 18 of them were rescued, rest of the nine miners are still trapped inside the mine and three of them are feared dead.
