Annoyed by Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s comparison of TET (Teachers’ Eligibility Test) certificates to a motor driving licence, TET teachers across the state are using the word ‘Driver’ before their names in Social Media as a mark of protest.
There are 41,000 contractual TET teachers in Assam
These TET teachers are disappointed at the education minister’s statement that the time period of the certificate will end in 2019 and in order to renew the certificate the teachers will need to sit again for TET exams. The minister had compared the TET certificates to a driving licence that needs renewal after a certain time. There are 41,000 contractual TET teachers in Assam.
“The education minister is trying to make the TET certificate meaningless. We have been working with this certificate for past seven years how can this be of no value now?” questioned a teacher.
“The education minister keeps on talking about the law. I believe he should become the law minister and we don’t wish him to be the education minister,” said another disgruntled teacher.
The ‘Driver’ term is an allusion of the Chowkidar ‘term’ which became popular during the 2019 General Elections when PM Narendra Modi used the word before his name after Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s jibe.
“One education minister implemented TET and brought a change in the lives of thousands of teachers. Now sadly, another education minister from the same government is mocking at the lives of the teachers,” lamented a teacher.
