Assam tableau wins Best Tableaux at 71st Republic Day parade

GUWAHATI: The Assam Tableaux that took part in Sunday’s Republic Day celebrations at Rajpath won the Best Tableaux award. The Assam tableau showcased the bamboo and cane crafts that form an integral part of the economy of Assam along with the dance performance of the ‘Bhortal Nritya’.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal wrote in Twitter “Glad to share the good news that the Assam tableau won first prize at this year’s #RepublicDay parade.

I congratulate all associated with the beautiful exposition of our cultural heritage that was welcomed with warmth by the nation. “

Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro was the chief guest for this year’s ceremony. The president witnessed the ceremony along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other dignitaries.

A total of 22 tableaux – 16 from the States and UTs and 6 from various ministries and departments – had taken part in the Republic Day celebrations at Rajpath, New Delhi. Odisha tableau has bagged the 2nd prize while UP has secured 3rd prize.

Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister will hand over the trophies to the winning states at New Delhi today. A senior official from Assam Bhawan in New Delhi is likely to receive the award from the defence minister.
