Assam is set to witness India’s first river terminal in Guwahati.
More than 60% of the construction of the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG) terminal, India’s first modern river ferry terminal on Brahmaputra, is complete.
The Rs 300 crore project funded by World Bank on the banks of Brahmaputra river at Fancy Bazar opposite the multi-level car parking premises of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), once completed will ensure safe transportation of passengers between Guwahati and nearby ghats during all seasons.
The terminal is equipped with all modern facilities, including a resting place for passengers and special facilities for the specially-abled, elderly, women and children.
Moreover, there will be cafes, canteen, ramp, vehicle parking and other facilities.
The foundation stone of the construction of the river terminal was laid by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in May 2022.
Meanwhile, according to a report by TOI, the Inland Water Transport (IWT) department of Assam has also started work for the construction of four modular river ferry terminals at North Guwahati, Umananda, Nimatighat and Aphalamukh in the state to improve waterway connectivity in the state.
