Assam: Schools likely to reopen after May 15, teachers favour no summer break

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: Though government offices resumed functioning from Tuesday in Assam, the educational institutes including schools, colleges and universities are still shut in the state along with the rest of the country. According to sources, schools are likely to reopen after May 15 though the extended lockdown will end on May 3. Schools in Assam have remained shut from March 15 amid COVID-19 crisis.

Following the suspension of physical classes for around 2 months, many teachers in the state are seeking no summer break for this year.

“These losses are not irreparable. We can compensate it if we can cancel summer vacation this year,” said a teacher.

“Normally we have summer vacation in July. But because of the unexpected situation, now we are ready to take classes in the month of July without taking summer break,” said another teacher.

On the other hand, though many schools have resorted to online classes, some teachers feel that this is not the best option to compensate the academic losses of the students.

“Many of our students do not have access to smartphones. So online classes are not so much effective particularly in rural areas,” said a teacher.
