Assam: Republic Day celebrated with patriotic fervour

GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the country, 71st Republic Day was celebrated all across Assam with patriotic fervour and colourful functions.

The state government observed Republic Day centrally at Veterinary College ground, Khanapara in Guwahati.

Assam governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi hoisted the tricolour at Khanapara. 

On the occasion of Republic Day, chief minister Sarbanada Sonowal paid floral tributes to the martyrs of the country at Shraddhanjali Kanan, Guwahati.

Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma unfurled the national flag at Nagaon Republic Day programme organised by the district administration.

In his speech, Dr. Sarma outlined various developmental initiatives BJP-led government has taken for Assam.

Republic Day was also celebrated with great enthusiasm at Gauhati High Court in the presence of chief justice of the high court Ajai Lamba.

In the cultural programme, veteran artiste Prabhat Sarma and his orchestra group, L.R Viswanath mesmerized the audience with their performances.

Republic Day programmes were organised in other parts of the state by the district, sub-divisional administrations and various public-private organisations.

Meanwhile, Guwahati witnessed a spectacular vintage car rally today which was flagged off by Assam Tourism Development Corporation chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah at Chandmari.

Bike rallies were also taken out in various parts of the state to mark the significant day of the country.

Though five serial low-intensity IED blasts by suspected ULFA(I) militants took place in four different locations in Upper Assam, the celebration of Republic Day remained peaceful in almost all parts of the state.
