Rich tributes were paid to music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika, also known as ‘Xudhakontho’ and the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’, on his 92nd birth anniversary. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Cultural Affairs minister Naba Doley along with other senior government officials and thousands of people paid their tributes to the ‘Asom Ratna’ at the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra at Jalukbari.

The Chief Minister also planted a sapling on the occasion. He also announced that the museum constructed in the memory of Bhupen Hazarika at the Samadhi Kshetra will formally be inaugurated on his death anniversary on Nov 5 this year.
He also announced that a ‘Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Kshetra’ will also be set up in a sprawling 300-bigha piece of land near the Dhola Sadia bridge.
Meanwhile, various programmes are also being organized across the State where people offered their tributes to the legendary singer. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is also organizing a special programme at Dighalipukhuri to offer tributes to the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’.
Xudhakontho’s fans and followers are also organizing programmes outside Assam, including a special function in Mumbai, to keep his legacy alive. The Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust in association with the Assam Association, Mumbai, organized a two-day programme titled ‘Samannay Divas’ where a memoir titled ‘Bhupen Hazarika – As I Knew Him’, written by his long-time companion Kalpana Lajmi, was also released.
