Assam remebers Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 12th death anniversary

GUWAHATI, Nov 5: Assam remembered Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, fondly addressed as ‘Xudhakontho’, on his 12th death anniversary with various programmes organized across Assam to offer tributes to the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’.

Born in Sadiya on Sep 8, 1926, Dr Hazarika passed away at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai on November 5, 2011.

The Assam Government is organizing a special function at the memorial of the legendary singer and music composer at Jalukbari while the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is organizing its central rememberance programme at Dighalipukhuri where floral tributes are being paid at ‘his Xudhakontho’s life-sized statue. 10,000 earthen lamps will also be lit before his statue in the evening.

Various singers are also remembering him though his immortal songs as competitions are also being organized at various places in his rememberance and to keep alive his legacy.

Various political leaders also took to the social media to pay their respects to the evergreen balladier.

“My solemn tribute to the Bard of Brahmaputra, Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Ji, on his punyatithi. Bhupenda’s creations exemplify the best of our culture and also set the precedent of how art can be best put to use to usher in social change.”
“The maestro’s creations will continue to serve as a message for generations to create a fair and equitable society,” Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on Twitter, now renamed ‘X’.


Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to the social media to pay his deepest respects to Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Various programmes are also being organized in Kolkata and Mumbai to remeber and pay respects to ‘Xudhakontho’
