Boarders of Cotton University hostels said they found leftovers of beef being dumped on the street near university hostels on Saturday
The recovery of what is suspected to be cow meat or beef in several parts of Assam, including Guwahati, has triggered alarm, with people demanding action against people involved in dumping of beef in public places.
Hostel inmates of Cotton University had alleged on Saturday that they found leftover of what appeared to be beef which was allegedly dumped near the university hostel.
“We saw remains of beef, including skull and intestines, scattered on the road near our university hostel on Eid evening on Saturday. A stench could also be felt. This is very shocking and alarming. When we asked who had dumped the beef leftovers, we were told that they could have been dumped by GMC garbage dumping personnel. This is for the first time that something like this has happened. We want a probe, and those behind dumping of beef near our hostel arrested,” a Cotton University boarder told News Live.
“This is a public place. Moreover, Sukreswar temple is just a few hundred meters away. It’s a very serious issue. The police and administration officials should look into the matter and take action,” a female hostal boarder of the prestigious university said.
Meanwhile, remains of beef-like meat were also recovered in Hojai town on Saturday triggering alarm among people.
Hundreds of people, particularly from the Hindu community, took to the streets in Borpukhuri locality of the town demanding action.
Incidentally, some people belonging to the Muslim community staged a counter road blockade at Bhuyanpatti.
Police and security forces are monitoring the situation. They also resorted to a mild baton-charge to ensure that communal tensions do not flare up.
Conscious sections of the society have expressed concern over the reported dumping of beef in public streets and have asked police to look into the issue and take stringent legal action against those behind such nefarious activities.
