Assam Polls: The man who voted in every election since independence

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: Ninety-two year-old Shri Rabha of Dudhnoi in Assam’s Goalpara district has witnessed the evolution and survival of democracy since India attained independence in 1947. From the first election of the country in 1952 to the ensuing Assam assembly elections 2021, Rabha has exercised his franchise in every election.

On Tuesday, the nonagenarian cast his vote at a polling station at Kothakuthi Lower Primary School in the Dudhnoi constituency.

The senior citizen was greeted with a ‘Gamocha’ by the poll officials.

Like Rabha, enthusiastic participation has been witnessed among other senior citizens in different polling booths under the third phase of polling.

In Bongaigaon, a senior citizen inaugurated a polling station by casting the first vote of the centre. He was felicitated by the administration.

Like the elderly voters, first time voters were also felicitated to encourage participation in the festival of democracy. The poll officials greeted the new generation voters with saplings.
