Assam Police continue crackdown on supporters of Pahalgam terror attack, 27 arrested so far

Assam Police have cracked down on people posting anti-India comments on social media after Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said people justifying or supporting the Pahalgam terror attack will face strict legal action

Assam Police have continued their crackdown on anti-nationals supporting or justifying the Pahalgam terror attack and posting anti-India remarks on social media platforms.

Cops have so far arrested 27 people ever since the arrest of AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam who became the first person to have been taken into custody on sedition charges after the Pahalgam terror attacks.

The AIUDF MLA was held from his residence in Dhing in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday following highly offensive comments he made in a video in which he linked the killings in Pahalgam and the 2019 Pulwama terror attacks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The other arrests in Assam till Sunday include Normal Hoque from Goalpara, Seikh Saroj from Baksa, Firajul Islam from Dhubri, Jarif Ali from Barpeta, Imran Hussain alias Komor Uddin from Cachar, Dadhichi Dimple alias Dimple Bora from Golaghat, Tahib Ali arrested from Baksa, Congress leader Bimal Mahato from Udalguri, Suman Mazumdar alias Bulbul Alam Majumdar from Hailakandi, Mashud Azhar from Nagaon, Baktar Hussain Barbhuiyan and Mohammad Imran Hussain Borbhuyan from Cachar, Mustak Ahmed alias Sahel from Karimganj, Anil Bania, district secretary of Satra Mukti Sangram Parishad from Behali, Jabir Hussain of Hailakandi, A.K. Bahauddin, a student from the Department of Computer Science at Assam University in Silchar, Javed Mazumder from Silchar, Mahahar Mia alias Mujihirul Islam of Morigaon and Sahil Ali of Sivasagar.

Eight persons have been arrested by Assam Police in the past 48 hours taking the total number of arrested persons to 27.

While a person named Normal Hoque was arrested by Goalpara Police, two others identified as Seikh Saroj and Firajul Islam were arrested by Tamulpur and Dhubri Police respectively for posting anti-India comments on social media, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in a post on ‘X’.

Five more — Kamal Uddin arrested by Sribhumi Police, Samsul Haque arrested by Kamrup Police, Abdul Mukit arrested by Sribhumi Police, Tahib Ali arrested by Tamulpur Police and another person who used a name Dark Knight on social media was arrested by Kokrajhar Police in the past 24 hours, Chief Minister Dr Sarma further added.

The arrests came after Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Thursday (April 24) cautioned people against making anti-India comments and said that Assam Police have been instructed to take strict action against anyone making offensive, insensitive and anti-India statements justifying or supporting the terror attack orchestrated by Pakistani terrorists.
