Guwahati: To prevent any accident caused due to drunken driving, a whopping Rs 4 crore has been collected by Assam police during its drive against traffic violators in the month of December.
The Assam Police on Thursday said that it had collected Rs 4 crore as fines during its drive against traffic violators in the month of December.
Commission of Guwahati police, Harmeet Singh said that during the drive against violators, the police had collected fines of Rs 2.5 crore per month until the month of November.
As many as 22,000 people have been penalized for not wearing helmets in the last 15-20 days.
In the past 7 days, 600 persons have been intercepted for drunken driving.
All of their licences were suspended and they have been fined Rs 10000 each.
The traffic police said that to ensure that no accidents take place during the New Year, the police will be on strict vigil to track down drunk drivers in the city.
Traffic police officials have said that they have taken a strategic plan to prevent accidents in the city and specifically during the new year.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered the police department to ensure that no accidents take place during the New Year celebrations.
The campaign can only be successful, if only citizens strictly adhere to the traffic rules, helping police in turn, reinforce the commitment of the Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma of making Assam an accident free state.
Till the month of August 2021, the Assam Police collected around Rupees 14 crore as penalty in Guwahati city for various reasons of traffic violations that include rash driving, parking at no-parking areas, riding without helmets, drinking and driving and others.
