Assam Panchayat Results: A clean sweep for BJP and allies while Congress bites the dust

PUBLISHED:

The Assam Panchayat results are being declared with counting of votes underway since 8 am today

As the Assam Panchayat results are being declared with counting of votes underway since 8 am today (May 11), the BJP and its allies are heading for an almost clean sweep while the Congress, the main Opposition party in the State, has been almost decimated in these grassroots-level elections.

While the BJP and its allies are either leading or have emerged victorious in 263 out of the total 397 Zila Parishad seats, the Congress is leading or have won in just 46 seats while the AIUDF are on course to bagging 12 seats.

On the other hand, out of the total 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats, BJP and its allies are leading/won in 631 seats while the Congress is leading in or have won just 62 seats while AIUDF is leading in or have won 10 seats.

The Congress has also suffered massive setbacks in Upper Assam districts, including Jorhat and Sivasagar districts which fall under the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency from where Gaurav Gogoi had won the general elections last year.

In both Jorhat and Sivasagar district, the Congress party have failed to win even a single Zila Parishad or Anchalik Panchayat seat.

In almost every district in Upper Assam, the party has put up a disappointing show with BJP and AGP candidates winning most of the Zila Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats.

The Panchayat polls are being seen as the semi-finals ahead of next year’s assembly elections in the State.

Elections were held in 27 districts of Assam in two phases — on May 2 and 7.

Elections in the first phase were held in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sreebhumi districts on May 2.

On the other hand, polls in the second phase on May 7 in Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, Darrang, Dhubri, South Salmara, Mankachar, Goalpara and Bongaigaon.

A total of 1,289 candidates — 21 Zila Parishad members, 151 Anchalik Panchayat members and 1,117 Gaon Panchayat members — were elected unopposed prior to the two-phase elections.
