A woman in Nalbari district of Assam has been arrested for throwing her 6-month-old baby into a pond after her husband, who was sleeping, did not heed to her request to take care of the toddler as she wanted to answer to nature’s call.

The shocking incident took place at Jowardi under Belsor Police Station early Sunday (May 4) morning.

The woman named Gitanjali Barman was taken into custody after she admitted to having thrown the her 6-month-old baby, a boy and their fourth child, into the pond after her husband did not respond to her request to take care of the baby.

The woman said she was fed up of constant bickering and ill-treatment meted to her by her husband, mother-in-law and even her brother-in-law and his wife who, she alleged, never took any care of her baby boy.

Today, when she wanted to answer to nature’s call, she asked her husband, who was sleeping, to take care of the baby boy but got no response from him.

“Nobody helps me in taking care of my baby boy. I wanted to answer to nature’s call in the morning today and so asked my husband to tend to the baby. But he did not respond and kept sleeping. In anger I threw the baby into the pond,” Gitanjali Barman, the cruel mother, told News Live.

I heard a commotion and initially thought something has happened to our mother. Then my wife said that my brother’s youngest son who was only 6 months old was missing. It was strange since the toddler couldn’t even crawl. When we launched a search, initially fearing that monkeys might have taken the baby. When we went near the pond, we saw the baby’s body floating in the water. The baby’s mother, my sister-in-law, has now confessed that she had thrown her own child into the pond,” Tapan Barman, the woman’s brother-in-law, said.

The couple have three other children — a boy and two girls — apart from the baby who died after being thrown into the pond by Gitanjali, the mother, today (May 4).

A team of cops came after the matter was reported to the police and retrieved the body from the pond besides taking the mother into custody.
