Assam: Motorcycle ambulance starts in Baksa

GUWAHATI: Assam state health department’s latest addition is a motorcycle ambulance service that was unveiled in Baksa district recently. This is the first of its kind ambulance service in Assam as well as in Northeast India. The bike ambulance was introduced at Dr. Rabi Boro Civil Hospital, Mushalpur on Monday.

The programme was attended by Dr. GN Deb Sarma, Joint Director of Health Services and Member Secretary, District Health Society, Baksa and other senior officers of the health sector.

The ambulance will provide access to emergency medical care in the Baksa district and is an initiative to bring change. Many places under Baksa district that were previously unserviceable will now get ambulance service in their areas.

It is to be mentioned that the bike ambulance was first introduced in World War I by British war engineers. In India, bike ambulance projects are operational at various places.

In West Bengal, Karimul Haque, a 53-year-old tea estate worker is called the ‘Bike-Ambulance-Dada’ by the people of Dhalabari in Jalpaiguri. Karimul received the Padma Shri in 2017, for helping thousands of patients by taking them to hospitals on his motorcycle ambulance.
