Four heritage sites and monuments of Assam will not be included under the Central Government’s ‘Adopt A Heritage’ Project. The Tourism Ministry today agreed not to include the Kaziranga National Park and three Ahom monuments — Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar and the Shiva Doul — in Sivasagar in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project that “plans to entrust heritage sites/monuments and other tourist sites to private sector companies, public sector companies and individuals for the development of tourist amenities”.

The development came after Assam Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma met Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphons in New Delhi today.

The Assam government had earlier written to the Centre opposing the move to include the Kaziranga National Park in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project following widespread protests in Assam. Various groups and organizations had protested, opposing New Delhi’s move to hand over the four heritage sites and monuments to a private party for their upkeep.

However, after today’s meeting, the central government agreed to exclude not only Kaziranga National Park but also the other three monuments from the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project.

The Assam Government had earlier held talks with leaders of protesting groups and organizations, allaying fears of any such move to hand over the four heritage sites to private parties.
