Assam locals block highway near Mizoram over murder case

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Tension prevailed near the Assam-Mizoram border in Assam’s Dholai constituency yesterday after angry locals blocked the national highway going to Mizoram.

The irate crowd blocked the highway, demanding a probe into the alleged murder of one Pravin Singh, which took place in Mizoram. Singh, who was a tanker driver by profession, had gone to Mizoram a few days back along with a handyman named Niren Singh.

Yesterday morning, the family was informed of the death of Singh and later the body was handed over to them. However, the situation heated up once the family members noticed injuries and stab marks on Singh’s body.

An irate crowd of locals then blocked the Assam-Mizoram highway, stalling traffic for the better part of the day. The protestors demanded that a proper probe be initiated into the matter, and things must be carried forward with the authorities in Mizoram in this regard.

Later, Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur reached the spot and reasoned with the protestors before the blockade was finally lifted in the later half of the day. The Cachar district SP promised the protestors that once the post mortem on the body is conducted, they would formally conduct a probe into the matter. Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged in this regard.

Speaking to Northeast Live, SP Ramandeep Kaur said that the main suspect is the handyman, and he is in the custody of the Mizoram Police.
