Assam Hooch Tragedy | Death toll crosses 150, rising

The death toll following the shocking hooch tragedy in the two Assam districts of Golaghat and Jorhat continues to rise with the toll crossing the 150 mark today (Feb 24).

The number of people who died after consuming spurious liquor in then two districts rose to 157 at the time of filing of this report and is expected to increase further with many out of the estimated 200 people undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) and Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital in Golaghat said to be in a critical condition.

While 76 people have died at JMCH, 64 breathed their last in Golaghat and 16 at Borhola in Titabor also in Jorhat district.

Police and the Excise department, meanwhile, are continuing with their crackdown on illicit liquor, destroying thousands of litres of country liquor (locally known as Sulai).

More than 15 people manufacturing and storing spurious liquor have been arrested amid the crackdown.
