GUWAHATI: Holi, the festival of colours are being celebrated today across Assam with much fanfare.
Though Coronavirus alert has been sounded in the state, the festival is being celebrated with enthusiasm in different parts of Assam.

Holi or Doul Utsav is being celebrated in accordance with tradition and rituals at the historic Barpeta Satra.

The uniqueness of Holi or Doul Utsav of Barpeta lies in its Holi songs. Mahapurush Madhabdev who established the Satra in 1583 wrote a few Doul songs such as Faku khele karunamoy (The Lord full of compassion plays Holi) and Dolai Gobinda paramanande (Krishna plays Holi blissfully) for ritualistic celebration of the festival.

In Barpeta, people have been advised to play Holi with locally made natural colours.
Every year, people from different parts of the state throng Barpeta Satra to celebrate Doul Utsav.

Holi festivity has also gripped Batadrava where elaborate arrangements have been made for three-day Doul Utsav at Batadrava Than.

Thousands started to throng at Doul Govinda Temple in North Guwahati from early morning on the occasion of Holi. Holi or Doul Utsav is being celebrated with religious fervour at Raghunath Temple, Srijangram in Bongaigaon.

Meanwhile, Assam governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal extended Holi greetings to the people of the state.

CM Sonowal also urged the citizens to take special care due to Coronavirus outbreak and use natural colours to celebrate Holi.
