Heavy to very heavy rains to lash Assam, warns IMD: As heavy downpour triggered waterlogging and flash floods in several parts of Guwahati since today (May 20) morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rainfall in Guwahati and the rest of the State in the next 2-3 days.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to lash various parts of the State in the next 2-3 days, the IMD warned on Tuesday.
As per rainfall data recorded on May 20, 2025, several locations in and around Guwahati have already received substantial precipitation — including 112.5 mm at the Guwahati AWS station, 115 mm at AAU-HRS, 110 mm at Mirza Circle Office, and 100 mm at IASST-Kamrup, the Gvernment stated in a release adding that “the figures indicate widespread and intense rainfall activity that is likely to persist”.
Western and Southern parts of Assam are likely to witness more intense rainfall over the coming days, the release further stated, with some locations likely to receive close to 200 mm of rainfall in the coming days.
The release further stated that the situation in Guwahati could further deteriorate in the wake of more rainfall, and warned of “slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of tree falls and localized landslides in vulnerable pockets”.
“City authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert, the release added.
The government and disaster management authorities have advised people to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant in.
Authorities also asked daily commuters and long-distance travelers to plan their routines accordingly, and to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall.
Residents in low-lying and hillside areas have also been asked to stay alert for any signs of flooding or soil erosion.
“The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain,” the released issued by Janasanyog Assam, further stated.
