The Assam Government will write to the Central government, opposing the latter’s decision to include the Kaziranga National Park in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project that “plans to entrust heritage sites/monuments and other tourist sites to private sector companies, public sector companies and individuals for the development of tourist amenities”. The government will also hold discussions with protesting groups and organizations so as to resolve all differences.
Assam Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma and Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah Thursday said the State government will write to the Centre, opposing the move to include the Kaziranga National Park in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project. Incidentally, the famed wildlife habitat that is home to the one-horned rhinocerous is the only national park in the country that has been included in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ list.
“We are taking note of the reactions expressed by various individuals and organizations regarding the move to entrust the Kaziranga National Park and three Ahom monuments — Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar and the Shiva Doul — to private parties for development of tourist amenities. We have decided to write to the Centre and oppose the move to include the Kaziranga National Park in the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project since no other national parks have been included in the project,” Assam Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma and ATDC chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah announced jointly.

Chandan Brahma and Jayanta Malla Baruah also said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has already instructed them to take people of Assam into confidence while complying with the central government’s instructions.
“Many groups and organizations have protested the central government’s decision. We will talk to them, probably in a day or two, and resolve all differences,” Brahma said.

The Government’s decision to hand over the Kaziranga National Park and three Ahom monuments to Jungle Travels India group has came in for sharp criticism with various protesting groups and organizations terming the move “totally unacceptable” and threatening to launch a vigorous protest against the decision.
