Assam Govt to pay electricity bills of 20 lakh needy households every month

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati:  The Assam Government will pay the electricity bills of 20 lakh households of Assam with an annual income of less than 2 lakh.

For the electricity bill, they will receive Rs 250 each per month through direct benefit transfer mode under an ongoing socio-economic empowerment scheme called ‘Orunodoi’.

“We will deposit Rs 250 per month in the bank accounts of each eligible beneficiary, which they will pay to the electricity department when they get their power bill. This is like free electricity,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted as saying by TOI.

Under the Orundoi scheme, since 2020, 20 lakh beneficiaries have been getting assistance transferred directly in their bank accounts by the 10th day of every month for buying medicines, fruits and vegatables, pulses and sugar.

Initially the monthly amount of assistance to each household was Rs 830 which was later increased to Rs 1,000. Now, with the additional assistance for electricity bills, each beneficiary will be receiving Rs 1,250 per month.
