Assam Govt to institute own set of civilian awards

GUWAHATI: To recognize the contribution of the distinguished personalities, the Assam government has decided to institute own set of civilian honours on line of Padma awards.

A meeting of the council of ministers chaired by chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday in Guwahati decided to institute Asom Ratna, Asom Bibhushan, Asom Bhushan and AsomShree awards.

“Asom Ratna to be given to 1 person every year for making significant contribution to society – Asom Bibhushan to be given to 3 people, Asom Bhushan to 5 people & Asom Shree to 10 people each yr” stated chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in a series of tweets.

The awards will carry Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively.

The cabinet also decided to confer literary pension on the birth anniversary of litterateur Homen Borgohain.

“To commemorate litterateur Homen Borgohain, Literary Pension shall be conferred on his name, every year on his Jayanti (December 7). In the same way, Sports Pension to be conferred in the name of Arjun Bhogeswar Barua on his Jayanti (September 3)” the chief minister added further.
