GUWAHATI: Assam Government has sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the protection of historic Urpad Beel located at Goalpara, Assam. Pramila Rani Brahma, Minister, Social Welfare and Soil Conservation, Assam on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of the beel’s embankment to protect this natural habitat. Urpad Beel is well known for its scenic beauty and is home to birds and fishes of different species. Also, a number of migratory birds come to the lake every year.
Minister Brahma also took a boat tour and enjoyed the beauty of Urpad Beel.
Located in Agia, 9 km away from Goalpara town, Urpad Beel is among the biggest natural lakes in lower Assam. It is widely known for its natural resources including fish and birds of different species like adjutant stork, whistling teal, kingfisher, etc, and water plants such as the water lily, the water hyacinth, etc.
