Assam Govt hikes petrol, diesel prices to generate revenue

GUWAHATI: In order to generate revenue by way of additional tax amid COVID-19 lockdown, the Assam Government has increased fuel prices in the state with effect from April 22. The government has increased Rs. 5.85 for per litre petrol and Rs. 5.43 for diesel. With this hike, the petrol price in Assam stands at Rs. 77.46 per litre, while diesel at Rs. 70.5 per litre.

On Tuesday, the Assam finance department issued a notification and modified the rates of Assam Value Added Tax (VAT) of diesel, petrol and other motor spirits.

The government notification stated, “Assam VAT for diesel has been fixed at 23.66 paise in the rupee or Rs 17.45 per litre, whichever is higher, and the tax for petrol and other motor spirits at 32.66 paise in the rupee or Rs 22.63 per lire, whichever is higher”.
