GUWAHATI, Dec 4: In a historic decision, the Assam Government today banned consumption of beef in hotels and restaurants in the State while also deciding not to allow its consumption in social functions.
The historic decision was taken in a meeting of the State cabinet which was attended by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma virtually from New Delhi.
“The issue of consumption of beef that has been the hot topic of discussion following allegations raised by Congress leaders Rakibul Hussain and APCC president Bhupem Kumar Borah was discussed threadbare in the State cabinet meeting today. After discussing the issue, the cabinet has decided to ban beef consumption in hotels and restaurants and also in social functions in the State,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma said in New Delhi while briefing media on the decisions taken in the cabinet meeting.
Chief MInister Sarma also spoke about other key decisions taken in the cabinet meeting, including the expansion of his council of ministers which will take place at 12 noon on Dec 7.
