GUWAHATI, July 21: Barshashree Buragohain who was arrested and subsequently jailed for writing a poem titled ‘ Akou Korim Rashtradroh’ (I will rebel against the nation again) in support of the outlawed ULFA and for encouraging and asking others to join the rebel militant outfit has been granted bail by Gauhati High Court today.

Gauhati High Court granted bail to Barshashree, a B.Sc second-semester student of Jorhat’s DCB College after Assam Police did not object to her petition seeking bail.

Currently lodged in Golaghat central jail, she will be released from prison after bail formalities are completed.

Barshashree was earlier granted permission to appear in her degree exams in which she has been appearing in prison since July 16.

After a furore over her arrest in May, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta refuted reports that she was arrested for merely writing a poem saying that she had used social media to indicated about her plans to join the outlawed ULFA-I besides also encouraging others to follow suit.

“What if she joins the outfit, comes back as a human bomb and triggers a blast, or returns with an AK-47? One must remember 42 people have been killed in the ULFA’s camp (in Myanmar),” Chief Minister Sarma had said.

“Our people are speaking to her and she is repenting her actions and what she had written in the social media. If she and her family assure us that she will not indulge in similar activities in future, we will release her,” the Assam Chief Minister added.
