Assam flood scene unchanged

PUBLISHED:

The flood situation in Assam continues to be grim with worst-hit Golaghat district showing no sign of improvement.

Many places in the district continue to be under water as both the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers are flowing above the danger level. Swirling waters of the Dhansiri washed away a newly-built bridge at Bhulaguri that was dedicated to the people only 20 days ago.

Meanwhile, Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia, who played a big role in sanctioning funds and construction of the wooden bridge, threatened to take NEEPCO to court besides announcing his decision to lodge a criminal case against NEEPCO authorities.

The situation in Uriamghat is no better with the Doyang and the Rengma eroding away large chunks of land mass besides flooding many villages.

On the other hand, floodwaters are threatening to wash away the old bridge over the national highway at Numaligarh and cut-off communication with upper Assam. A part of the new bridge that was built over the four-lane highway was washed away by floodwaters yesterday (Aug 2).
