‘Assam Express’ Hima eyes Olympic glory

Ace sprinter Hima Das today (Sep 8) thanked people of Assam for their unstinted love, support and blessings and promised to work hard in the coming months and years and bring laurels for the country and the home State. Hima, who emerged as one of the most successful athletes in the recently concluded 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, also asked budding athletes and sportspersons to start from scratch and work hard with determination so as to achieve their goals.

Lauding the new sports policy of Assam, Hima said things are moving in the right direction and hoped that sportspersons from the State will be able to win more medals in international tournaments.

Speaking on the prospects of winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Hima said that she will give her level best to earn more laurels for the country and her home State.

She also said that her father, who had also been a sportsperson, has been one of her biggest inspirations and that she was influenced by him to take up sports as a career.

She also expressed her gratitude to singing superstar Zubeen Garg for supporting her besides naming Sachin Tendulkar and Lionel Messi as her sporting idols.

Hima had arrived in Guwahati from New Delhi yesterday, and was accorded a rousing reception with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, DGP Kuladhar Saikia, AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyaa welcoming the star sprinter at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport.

Later in the evening, the Assam Government felicitated the ace sprinter, rewarding her with Rs 1.6 crore for her performance in the Asian Games and the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics championships and also naming her as the sports ambassador of Assam.
