GUWAHATI: Good news for the people of Assam as the government has decided to turn the Brahmaputra river in Kaliabor as a new tourist destination. The tourism spot is surrounded by the beautiful Bhumuraguri Pahar and Silghat. Kalibor is a three hour ride from Guwahati and can be reached in four hours from the LGBI airport.

Along with a glimpse of the sunrise as well as sunset, visitors will also be able to enjoy a speed boat ride in the river. The river has a huge population of river dolphins and the tourism spots will attract visitors to the area. It will also give a boost to small scale businesses in the area for unemployed youths.

“We under the Nagaon wildlife are trying to develop tourism in the area, as this river is famous for the high population of Brahmaputra river dolphins. So, we are trying to convert this place to a new tourism destination,” said the DFO Nagaon wildlife division.

“We are trying to boost tourism. Tourism is about to increase as international tourism has decreased after the pandemic. We will use forest department boats for tourism purposes. This river has a large number of river dolphins and tourists will be able to get a glimpse of the natural beauty”, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Bitupon Neog.

Also to be mentioned is, river cruises on the Brahmaputra are already offered by both Assam Tourism and private operators. Some of these operate small tours along Guwahati city while some operators offer luxury services to Kaziranga and beyond. The cruises cover some of the national parks including the Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage Site, and Majuli, one of the largest riverine islands in the world.
