Guwahati: An encounter took place between foresters and poachers in Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday evening. The incident took place at Kartika Chapari in Kohora range of the National Park.
The poachers entered Kaziranga taking advantage of the Republic Day as everyone was busy celebrating the occassion.
The faceoff between the forest guards and poachers took place when the poachers were trying to kill a rhino. Earlier during the day, forest guards at the Arimora forest camp in the Kohora forest area of Kaziranga National Park spotted a man. On witnessing footprints the guards started inspecting the area and later two unidentified persons were spotted at Kartika Chapari.
After seeing the poachers, the forest workers fired bullets shots at them. But they ran away inside the dense jungle.
The Director of Kaziranga National Park informed that the Forest Department had earlier detected poaching. After they received the information forest department started with a search operation. The search for poachers continues.
