Assam doctor assault case: Two more arrested

GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Saturday arrested two more accused including a woman in the infamous doctor assault case at Udali COVID Care Centre in Hojai district.

The arrested accused have been identified as Gulnesa Begum and Muktar Ali.  Lanka Police arrested them from Pipulpukhuri area.

So far, 28 accused have been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident took place on Tuesday after a COVID-19 patient succumbed to the infection at Udali COVID care centre.

The mob comprising family members and relatives of the patient brutally assaulted Dr Seuj Senapatai and other medical staff.

They also vandalized the hospital.

The injured doctor has been undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

On Saturday morning, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Dr Senapati at the hospital.

CM Sarma assured the family members of the doctor that he would be allowed to serve in a health Institute of his choice, when he resumes services.

“..assured his family that Dr Senapati would be allowed to serve in a health Institute of his choice, when he resumes services,” Sarma stated in a tweet.

Sarma also reiterated Assam government’s zero tolerance policy against incidents of attack on doctors and health workers.
