Assam: Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi shot at by Naga land encroachers

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Mariani Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi was attacked by Naga land encroachers at Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest under Mariani Range of Jorhat forest division, Assam. Kurmi had gone to the reserve forest to enquire about the situation after news came that encroachers from Nagaland had been reported from the area.

Speaking to News Live MLA Kurmi said, “I am very much thankful to the Assam police, the local residents, and my two Personal Security Officer (PSOs) for saving my life. The land encroachers started firing as soon as we entered the area. In retaliation to that, the officers of Assam Police and my PSOs also started firing bullets in order to defend us”.

Kurmi also added, “We have informed the higher authorities about the land encroachment of the Naga people in the forest area but no one paid any attention. So today, being the MLA of Mariani I have come here to enquire about it as the higher authorities failed to take any actions and so we got stuck in the situation. I am very hurt that today we had to run to save our lives from the Naga people that, too, in our own land”.

“But there is still time to save our land from these Naga encroachers if we take proper action. I request our CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to take action against such land encroachments and save our land. This is not the first time such incidents have been reported but nobody could take any action. I urge CM Sarma to look into the matter and take severe actions against the culprits,” said the Congress MLA from Mariani.
