Guwahati: After the tragic boat accident in Nimatighat, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the spot and reviewed steps taken by the Inland Water Transport Department and admin of Jorhat.
CM Sarma reviewed all the steps taken by the Inland Water Transport Department of Jorhat and Majuli to ensure smooth movement of ferries and safety of passengers.
Taking to his Twitter CM Sarma wrote, ” Six days after my 1st visit to Nimatighat, I went there again today to review steps taken by Inland Water Transport Dept & admin of Jorhat, Majuli to ensure smooth movt of ferries & safety of passengers. CM Sarma also reviewed a Ro-Pax at Nimatighat and said that IWT has made services of 2 Ro-Pax vessels operational between Jorhat & Majuli after a thorough inspection.
He also added that 2 vessels – MV Raj Lakshmi and MV Digaru – will reach Majuli soon, while another is being developed by IWT.
The Chief Minister also informed that the state has requested the Government of India to send two more Ro-Pax vessels to Assam, of which one will ply between Jorhat and Majuli.
Till now 8 local boats have been suspended for having single engines and these boats would be converted into marine engines at the expense of the State Government.
