Assam CM urges people to “shun the culture of donations”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appeals to citizens to “shun the culture of donations” on Thursday.

Sarma urged people to put a full stop to the donation culture in Assam this Puja festivities.

Sarma said to all the donee across the state, “Let’s stop harassing business owners, big or small, by collecting money in name of Puja donations.”

Taking to Twitter, CM wrote, “Let’s Shun Culture of Donations! My request to all: let’s put a full stop to the chanda culture in Assam this Puja festivities. Let’s stop harassing business owners, big or small, by collecting money in name of Puja donations. Let’s get rid of donation culture, once & for all.”

Earlier, during the Rongali Bihu, the Chief minister requests organisers not to force businesses to donate and announced a grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to Bihu committees that are over 10 years old.

Meanwhile, the state government also mulling making forced donation a criminal offense and will table legislation in the state assembly.

Earlier he stated that the state government will soon introduce a Bill in the Assembly on organised crime.
