Assam: CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma visits national highway strip being prepared for emergency landing of fighter jets in Moran

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the upcoming emergency landing facility at Moran By-pass, being constructed under the Dibrugarh-Moran National Highway project in coordination with the Indian Air Force.

The first such facility in Northeast India, it is designed to support emergency landings of military and civilian aircraft, including Sukhoi & Rafale jets.

Implemented by NHIDCL, this strategic project will enhance disaster response and national security readiness, and is expected to be completed by October 2025.

“The Union government has given the nod to prepare a portion of national highway from Moran to Numaligarh and to use it as an emergency landing facility for Air Force fighter jets like Sukhoi 30 and Rafale. A stretch of 4.2 km on this national highway is being prepared to land fighter jets. We are aiming for a October deadline,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma told News Live after reviewing construction with NHIDCL and IAF officials.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma, who is on a two-day visit to Upper Assam, also inspected the ongoing construction of the Sivasagar Cancer Care Hospital and Sivasagar Medical College at Demow, Sivasagar.

The institution is envisioned as a state-of-the-art centre of excellence, equipped with advanced medical facilities to meet the healthcare needs of the region.

Dr Sarma also chaired a review meeting with senior officials and directed them to ensure timely and smooth completion of the project. Once operational, the facility, Chief Minister Dr Sarma said, will significantly bolster the medical infrastructure and provide high quality care to the people of the State.

He also visited the premises of the Ahom ampitheatre Rang Ghar to review ongoing works under the Rang Ghar Beautification Project and inspected the proposal for an RCC-lined covered canal to address the issue of rainwater accumulation.

The beautification work, it may be mentioned here, is underway and is expected to be completed within the next 16-18 months.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma also visited the ONGC well at Bhotiapar-Barichuck in Sivasagar district which had suffered a blowout on June 12 which was successfully capped after 16 days on Friday (June 27).

Dr Sarma said the government will discuss the issue of providing adequate compensation to affected families after holding talks with ONGC and district administration officials.
