Assam celebrates Goru Bihu today

GUWAHATI: Despite COVID-19 concerns, the people of Assam have been celebrating Goru Bihu, the first day of Rongali Bihu with traditional fervor.

In the morning, the villagers took their cows to the banks of a river or a pond, and gave a ceremonial bath. Every cattle owner then offered the cows some vegetables to eat wishing for their good health.

Meanwhile, Bihu Committees have organised Mukoli Bihu programmes across the state following the COVID-19 norms set by the government.

The historic Latasil Bihutoli in Guwahati witnessed enthusiastic participation of the people on Wednesday.

Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi also joined the crowd to dance to the tune of Bihu song.

“I remember coming here several times with my father,” said Gaurav while remembering his late father and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

Rongali or Bohag Bihu, Assam’s harvest festival lasts for seven days and they are known as Chot Bihu, Goru Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Senehi Bihu, Mela Bihu and Chera Bihu.

The first day of Bihu is dedicated to cows. Therefore, it is known as Goru Bihu.
