GUWAHATI, Dec 12: The carcass of an elephant was recovered at Kandali Kacharigaon in Nagaon district this morning. Villagers saw the body of the pachyderm in the paddy fields and informed the local forest office.
It is not immediately known as to how the elephant, a young calf, died but it is believed that the death was due to natural reasons. Forest department officials arrived at the spot and are trying to figure out the exact reason behind the elephant’s death.
Villagers said an elephant herd has been straying into nearby villages frequently. It is believed that the dead elephant belonged to the herd and died due to unknown reasons.
Meanwhile, incidents of elephant herds straying into villages have been reported from various parts of the State.
A giant elephant, apparently injured, has been loitering around in Birkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati since the last couple of days.
Villagers said the elephant had strayed out of the Amchang wildlife sanctuary in search of food and injured itself. Although residents of the area informed Forest department officials, no one has come out to provide treatment to the injured elephant.
On the other hand, an elephant herd strayed into Laokhowa No. 2 Bhurbandha village and entered the residential compound of a peson named Prabin Rai.
The marauding elephant herd damaged Rai’s residence besides devouring rice from his granary.
