Assam By-polls: Congress names candidates for 4 seats, Behali hangs in limbo

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI, Oct 21: The Congress party Sunday evening officially announced the names of party candidates for four by-poll-bound constituencies of Assam while the fate of Behali, which the Congress initially left for ally partners CPI(ML) only to be met with stiff resistance from party leaders, still hangs in limbo.

While retired IPS officer Brajenjit Singha has been fielded from Bongaigaon, Tanzil Hussain, son of former Assam Minister Rakibul Hussain, has been given the ticket from Samuguri.

Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha has been fielded from Dholai (SC) seat and Sanjib Warle has been given the ticket from Sidli (ST) seat.

On the other hand, the tug-of-war for Behali continues with CPI(ML) candidate Bibek Das adamant at contesting from the seat while a section of Congress workers, led by Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi, unhappy with the party’s decision to leave the seat to CPI(ML), wants Jayanta Bora to be given the party ticket from the constituency.
