Assam brides to get Rs. 40 thousand to buy gold

GUWAHATI: The financial assistance under the Assam government’s ‘Arundhati’ scheme will be enhanced to Rs.40 thousand, announced finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in his budget speech at the Assam Legislative Assembly today.

Earlier, brides from the state got Rs. 30 thousand under the flagship scheme of the state government. Finance minister Sarma announced today that the newlyweds would get Rs. 40 thousand in lieu of 1 tola gold.

“The financial assistance under ‘Arundhati’ will be enhanced to Rs. 40,000. A sum of Rs.150 Crore has been allocated for this scheme in Budget 2020-21,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The benefit under this scheme has been extended to all brides coming from families which have less than Rs. 5 Lakh annual income and who opt for formal registration of marriages under the Special Marriages Act, 1954.

The applications for Arundhati Gold Scheme and the registration of marriage under Special Marriages Act, 1954 can be done on the same day through a web based application which is already in place.
