The BJP has scripted a memorable victory in the panchayat polls in Assam, with the BJP-AGP combine winning over 300 Zila Parishad seats
BJP tsunami annihilates Congress in Assam panchayat polls: The BJP has decimated and annihilated the Congress in the Panchayat polls as counting of votes continued till today while the final tally, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, is expected by Monday night.
While the BJP and its ally AGP have so far emerged victorious in 307 out of the total 397 Zila Parishad seats, the Congress won just 62 seats while other parties and Independents won 28 seats.
On the other hand, NDA candidates have emerged victorious in 1,409 out of the total 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats, while the Congress won just 122 seats and others getting 41 seats.
The Congress along with Raijor Dol and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) were decimated in the elections which are being considered as the big semi-finals ahead of next year’s assembly elections in Assam.
In cricketing terminnology, NDA’s results would be synonymous to scoring a triple century after the ruling alliance partners won 307 Zila Parishad seats while relegating the Congress, which could not open its account (in Zila Parishads) in nine districts of Assam.
Such has been the landslide victory for BJP and AGP candidates in Upper Assam that the Congress failed to win even a single seat in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Biswanath and Sonitpur districts.
The focus of the Congress’ flop show — without a shadow of doubt — would surely be the districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo which form the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency that had seen a big Congress wave in the 2024 general elections.
The Gaurav Gogoi bubble, if there was any a year ago, has surely burst 12 months later. The Congress party failed to win any ZPC seat not just in these three districts but in all districts of eastern Assam.
Even in minority-dominated districts of Nagaon, Morigaon and Hojai, the BJP registered impressive results with political analysts saying that the pro-people welfare measures undertaken by the Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam Government were instrumental in even minority voters supporting the NDA in these grassroots-level elections.
The BJP also registered thumping victories in the three Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Sribhumi and Hailakandi, winning 32 out of the 49 ZPCs.
Even in 10 districts of Lower Assam — 9 of which now are Muslim-majority — the BJP won 82 out of the total 130 Zila Parishad seats.
Then where did the Congress win? The Congress won in Barpeta, Dhubri, South Salmara, Darrang and Kamrup districts where minority voters turned out as the Congress’ only face saver.
The BJP, meanwhile, singled out Gaurav Gogoi with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma saying that the Congress MP’s victory in Jorhat in 2024 made him and the party proud.
He also said the BJP will perform even better in the 2026 assembly polls, claiming that the NDA could win at least 95 seats while the tally could go up to as high as 104 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
