Assam: BJP gears up for Gossaigaon bypoll

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam has started exercises for the soon-to-be-held Gossaigaon bypoll. The seat became vacant after the death of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MLA Majendra Narzary due to post-COVID-19 complications. Narzary breathed his last at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on 26 May.

Many ticket aspirants from the saffron party have started connecting with the voters and a Mandal level meeting was held recently. BJP’s youth leader and social worker, Jethmal Maloo Thunia and incumbent MCLA from Srirampur, Sajal Kumar Sinha are the two prime contenders if BJP contests from Gossaigaon. Both the local leaders have suggested that a BJP candidate has better chances to win from Gossaigaon.

In the recently-held Assam Legislative Assembly Election, BPF’s Majendra Narzary got 70,407 votes, whereas the nearest rival from UPPL, Somnath Narzary polled 60,064 votes. The BJP did not put up a candidate as they were in an understanding with Pramod Boro-led UPPL. Led by Majendra Narzary, the BPF had won the Gossaigaon constituency in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021. The seat is a part of the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.
