Assam begins vaccination drive against Covid for 15-18 age group

Guwahati: “I got my jab and now it is your turn to get vaccinated. Together we will fight Covid,” Bibek Roy, Assam’s first student to be vaccinated today in the 15-18 age group, said.

Bibek took his Covaxin shot at the OIL Higher Secondary School in Duliajan in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district where chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma formally inaugurated the state’s vaccination drive on Monday.

Notably, Dibrugarh District Immunization Officer informed that around 85,000 students have been listed to receive the vaccine shots.

“This is a very good news that we have started vaccinating the students. We are planning to vaccinate 20 lakh students and we sincerely hope we can complete the first dose within 45 days and complete the entire two doses within 60 days,” the chief minister said.

“We just have about 1 lakh people in Assam who are yet to take the first vaccination dose. So this is a very heartening trend,” added the chief minister.

Taking to Twitter Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “#AssamCovidUpdate Grateful to Adarniya PM Sri @narendramodi for the next phase of India’s vaccination drive for children aged 15-18. Glad to have launched Assam’s #Covid vaccination drive at Oil India HS School, Duliajan today. I urge all to take their vaccines.”

In Guwahati, fifteen schools have been selected as Covid Vaccination Centres (CVCs).

“The response from both parents and students has been very encouraging,” Assam health minister Keshab Mahanta said.
