GUWAHATI: Popular Assamese singer Vidya Sagar and actor Asha Bordoloi joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. The artistes joined the BJP in the presence of state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Lok Sabha MPs Pallab Lochan Das and Topon Kumar Gogoi at a meeting at Hengerabari office of the party in Guwahati.
Singer Vidya sagar who had taken part in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) said, “CAA will never harm the Assamese. It was misinterpreted.”
On the other hand, Asha Bordoloi explained her reasons of joining the BJP, “I am influenced by the mentality of selfless service of the BJP workers. I believe that BJP will never work against the interests of the Assamese people. So, I was not associated with the anti-CAA protests.”
Both the artistes claimed that they had no intention to seek candidature in the 2021 assembly elections.
Litterateur Prava Choudhury Dastidar and former sports secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Tapan Das also joined the saffron party.

Earlier on Monday, actor Jatin Bora rejoined the BJP, eight months after quitting the party over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, Bora said that during the anti-CAA protests he had become “emotional” and that only now he has realised the “mistake”.
“The anti-CAA movement had caused extensive damage to the city. It was a horrific experience for many people including me as it claimed lives of five youths,” he said.
